Groom’s Style Today: What’s In

Groom’s Style Today…

Today’s wedding couples have just as much focus on the groom as there is on the bride. While he may not be out shopping all over town for a suit or tuxedo for himself and his groomsmen, a man’s style is as important to the wedding as is the bride’s gown. Men need to work their own identity into their suits as well so they feel and look as good as their fiancée on the big day.

The Dress Code…

Tux or suit depends on the time of day. Black tie or formal? A dark suit or tuxedo is worn. Daytime wedding? A suit is suitable. A tux typically is worn in the evening.

Accessories…

This may be the best way to incorporate a man’s style in with the suit that has been chosen; whether its wing-tipped shoes, patent black leather or Converse, shoes are always a great accessory. And why stop at one pair? After a few hours at the reception, you may want to change into another comfortable pair. Don’t count out the cufflinks; if there are no cufflink heirlooms that will be used in the wedding, perhaps your bride could search online for cufflinks that perfectly represent her mate, whether they are plain or even made of Lego’s. Pocket scarves are a great way to incorporate a man’s favorite color (preferably in a complementary color to the overall color scheme), and fun socks like colorful argyle are a great addition. Ties may be pin dotted, skinny or with a pattern. A bow tie always looks sharp. Socks are being matched to the color of the suit for a fresh style.

Go Big or Go Home…

A growing trend for the groom is “be you”, dressed to the nines and ready to impress. To pull this off the groom will either set the pace for him and his groomsmen or make a statement and dress in a style more fitting of his and personality. From top hats to three-piece suits, solid color or plaid, have fun with your style.

Smart Casual…

Not every wedding is a black tuxedo formal. We’ve seen the rise of the smart casual look for weddings, where the groom and his groomsmen don some clothing they are probably much more comfortable in. These options can include jeans paired with wing-tipped shoes, a button down shirt and jacket, sweaters or cardigans instead of suit jackets for fall weddings, shorts for summer weddings, and sometimes even plaid button-downs to add some color instead of the usual white dress shirt. Think of the total day and consider suspenders for when the jacket comes off when the party gets “hot”.

Think Color…

Who said that all suits have to be black? If the bridesmaids are wearing a neutral color (you shouldn’t match bridesmaid dresses and grooms suits), a groom may be interested in adding a big pop of color with his suit. Popular trending colors for 2019 include an accent of metallic with base colors of blush, blue, and emerald. Wedding trends include navy and royal purple. Or, if the groom and his men are feeling particularly brave, style each one with a color of their own color.

Get it Right…

When you pick up your suit, be it by rental or purchase, before you take it out of the store try it on again to be sure all alterations have been completed. Be sure all the accessory pieces: studs, cummerbund, collar stays, buttons are in your package.

No matter what the Groom’s style is, be sure to have fun and make your wedding day exude the love and caring that the two of you share. There is no right or wrong, there is just “Perfect” for the two of you.
