Wedding Music - Choosing Your Unique Song

A Different Look at Wedding Music

The first dance for a bride and groom is a very special moment, one that they will always remember and the song they pick is also something that will always be a part of that memory. While that memory may be very special and unique to the couple, the song that plays is probably not.

It seems couples use "staple" songs; the same songs that have been played at wedding after wedding. Maybe it's time to take a different look at wedding music and explore some alternative options. Artists like Jacqui Naylor and Anders Holst give couples something new to consider.

Jacqui's song "Celebrate Early and Often" tells her own story of falling in love with her husband. In fact, the first time she sang the song was at her own wedding. Finding true love like theirs is the central theme of the most played "first dance" songs at weddings and I think the experiences Jacqui sings about in this song are shared by countless lovers around the world. This is best shown through the chorus: "Celebrate early and often / 'Cause wishes, can turn into kisses / So jump and sing, show off that ring and dance."

Anders Holst is another artist, who offers a more up-tempo choice with his song, "All About Soul." This is his rendition of the Billy Joel original, but with a smooth and jazzy feel. Anders infuses his own smoky, emotive vocals, while slowing the track down just enough. The chorus conveys a strong feeling newlyweds can relate to: "It's all about soul / It's all about faith and a deeper devotion / It's all about soul / 'Cause under the love is a stronger emotion."

Hopefully these ideas will help couples think outside of the box in finding the perfect song for their wedding and give them some alternatives to the standards that have been around for years. It is their special day and the songs they play should be theirs rather than something that they share with countless other brides and grooms.

Other Artists To Consider

Peter Buffett is an artist whose work you've probably heard before but never knew it. He is an Emmy-winning composer for television, movies, and commercials, who recently began recording solo albums of his own. His song "Can We Love?" is one that belongs at a wedding- it was written both as a personal appeal and a universal question. The quest for finding the time and space that is singular to two people in love is the central theme of the song. Its request for "Love in the time that we Live" acknowledges that there's no time like the present to express love for one another.

KJ Denhert wrote "I Found You" as an affirmation that she would one day find love. Since then she has sang her song at many weddings and has even been flown to Florida from New York to sing "I Found You" as a dedication to the groom. A fun little anecdote about this song is that it made KJ's recording studio engineer cry-she caught him all teary-eyed listening to the song, when she went to pick up the mastered track from the studio. Nicole Henry has released a lovely piano-driven cover of this KJ Denhert song, as well. "Now that I found you, please don't go away/I told you I love you in my simple way / I could hold you when the sunshine goes away /Let me love you in my quiet way/ Now that I found you things are ok."
